In most locations in Canada, natural gas is the most common technology used for heating buildings through our long northern winters. Due to building code requirements, most Canadian have reasonable quantities of insulation in thier walls and roofs, and increasingly have double or triple paned glass windows to reduce heat loss, both key elements of a facility’s static building envelope. On the other hand, far less attention is given to heat loss due to building openings, especially pedestian, parking garage and freight doors. Solar water heating for domestic and process hot water uses has become a major, often the standard way to heat water. Solar water heating systems are used widely in many cold climate nations. In terms of energy productivity, solar hot water production is far more efficient that solar photovoltaics and therefore more cost effective as well.

Transportation is one of the highest emmitters of Greenhouse Gases (GHG). The transition to Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) technology is a race to the future, and in many ways, Canada is a key player in this transformation. Canada has for decades been the global leader in the development of hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen electrolyzer technologies. Today, this technology is being used to displace diesel fuel for buses and trains globally. It is also being used at the micro-scale for distribution centre forklfts. Soon we will see the mass introduction of hydrogen fuel cell automobiles and trucks.
